First Communion Blanket shows the words First Holy Communion in a flowing script, set above a blessing about peace, light and joy. A white chalice sits at the top and a glowing cross at the bottom, all printed on a deep charcoal background.

The design in detail

The largest element is a tall, pale cross that rises through the middle of the black field, its light soft enough that it reads as a glow rather than a hard shape. Above the blessing, the script First Holy Communion sweeps across in large letters, with Communion drawn in a bigger, looping hand than the rest. A small white chalice with a cross on its cup sits at the top center, framed by a few rays of light, and a matching cross with rays sits at the bottom. Thin white corner flourishes frame the whole print, giving it the look of an old prayer card. The blessing itself is set in a plain serif in lines of white, with the words peace, Love and Joy in bold so the eye lands on them first. The closing line, FAITH · LOVE · HOPE, is spaced out in capitals at the foot of the blessing. Together the chalice, the cross and the blessing make one quiet, formal picture that suits a day of ceremony.

When it gets used

You will most likely see this First Communion blanket in the hands of a child who has just taken part in the ceremony, wrapped over the shoulders after the church service or laid across a couch during the afternoon celebration. Parents and godparents often want something to keep beside the photos, and the blessing gives them words to read aloud when the day is quiet. Families who host a lunch or party can place the blanket on a chair where guests will see the first lines of the prayer. Years later it can come out again on the anniversary of the day, so the blessing about peace and light stays close to the family.

Good occasions

The obvious moment is the First Communion day itself, when a child receives the sacrament for the first time. A blanket like this also fits a family party held in the weeks afterward, or a gift from a grandparent who could not attend the church service. You can choose between the Fleece Throw Blanket, the Sherpa Throw Blanket, the Fleece Blanket and the Sherpa Blanket, depending on whether you want something light for a bed or something warmer for a couch. The print comes in one color, so the chalice and cross stand out the same way on every style.
